Here are some tutoring tips that you can try.

  1.  If you have alphabet letters or flashcards, take turns forming words and quizzing one another.

  2. Have your students practice writing answers in a complete sentence by using TTQA (Turn the Question Around).  Here is a 1-minute YouTube clip explaining TTQA:

The first tip will give your student practice sounding out words and will provide some variety to your session.  The second tip will help teach your student how to answer questions in a complete sentence.  Make sure you ask your student text-dependent questions — questions that require them to read the text!
